The history of the Swedish flag goes back to the 16th of century. The colours come from the Swedish coat of arms, which features three golden crowns in a field of blue.
In the 6th of June, happens two important events in the history of Sweden: Gustav Vasa was elected king on 6 June 1523 – which laid the foundation for Sweden as an independent state and Sweden adopted a new constitution on 6 June 1809.
From the 1890s onwards, there were flag celebrations on 6 June at the open-air museum of Skansen in Stockholm. These were initiated by Artur Hazelius, founder of the museum.
In 1916, Sweden started to make the 6th of June an official national celebration of the Swedish Flag Day. It took until 1983 for at the 6th of June become officially the National Day of Sweden. And it was only in 2005 that Swedish National Day was made a public holiday.
The Swedish national anthem “Du gamla, du fria” was written by Richard Dybeck in 1844.
